research and planning

Who is being represented in the opening scene? How are they represented? Is this positive or negative?

Jaws
In the opening scene of Jaws only teenagers are shown showing that they are being represented. They are represnted in a negative way as we see them as out late doing things they shouldnt be doing on the beach such as smoking and drinking which they are also probably not even old enough to do. We also see the teenagers as a appy sociable group which could be seen as a positive representation.

Vertigo
In Vertigo it is only a women that is being represented. When we see her she comes across to us as a scared and confused as if she is looking for someone. The shots then focus of different areas of her face such as her eyes giving us different emotions from her eyes. The women is represented in a bad way as she is a scared women we come to a conclusion that she cannot protect herself, This would usualy be the other way round for men.

Panic Room
No one is particualy being represnted in the opening scene of Painic Room. The shot is it simply passing through the different landscapes of New York city showing were the film is going to be set. What could be represented is city life as a whole. Although it may also be represented in a negative way as whilst the camera is moving throught the different landmarks the music is very serious and we can hear police sirens in the background possibly showing danger.

Se7en
In the opening scene of se7en it consists of alot of dark rooms and a metronome is set off. This could represent the begining of something and the time it counts. A close shot is shown of Morgan Freeman, which looks as if he is oncentrating on something. This is a positive representaion as it is clear he is determined to solve the string of murders.

Comparison between the film openings Se7en and Panic Room
Both Opening scences dont use actors staright up but use objects. In Panic room  the opening shows just the landmark of a city showing us were the film is set, it also plays serious music and we can hear sirens showing that that also may be a danger. While the opening scene to Se7en is showing us through books and quotes and we can see a persons hand underlining certain parts of text in a book. The music played is also more scientific and suspicious giving us different  to what the genres of each film may be. In Panic Room we get a feeling that the genre is going to be a thriller as it seems quiet intense. This is also the case with Se7en as they are both intense openings giving us an idea of them both being thrillers although the opening of Se7en also gives the idea of a crime thriller with all the notes at the begining and as the person is cutting out different words. Both Openings are good in there ways as Panic Room is not giving off alot at the begining keeping us wondering and interested, the same with Se7en but they both keep it interetsing so we are not bored.

DVD/Poster analysis

This Poster of the film "Limitless" shows 3 divided photos, all containing the main protgonist Bradley Cooper. He is also a well known actor so drawing in a wider audeince of also older women as they may want to see the film more due to him being involved. All the photos are blurred which could suggest the film being very fast paced and also high tech. The photos are also split into three sections to give way for the 3 main characters that are all very well known drawing more attention to the film already. The Poster also involved a textual question "What if a pill could make you rich and powerfull?" This interacts with the audience making them feel more involved. It also gives them an inside of what the film is about and how it is going to unfold.

Audeince expectation of a thriller
An audience will have a certain expectation of a thriller as no matter what sub-genre it come under all thrillers as expected to be fast pacing. Different thrillers would have different expectations most thrillers are expected to have terror in them, keeping them close to horrors. The word thriller makes an audeince expect that the film will contain a deep storyline that will build tension throughout and keeps the audience in suspense. Thrillers are made to make the audience jump but are not the same as horrors as they are mainly about death and made to just scare the viewer, a thriller wants to keep the audience waiting and watching and makes them axious of what could happen next.

Location

This is a part of the scene called "jaws bridge"
The location is set in the fictitious Amity Island is holiday retreat Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts.

Genre
I am chosing this film to look at and analyse because this is also a thriller genre, the sub-genres to the film would be action and horror. This is because it includes alot of death and blood making it a very villiant film.

Camera shot/angle/movement
The shot begins with a point of view going through the sea as if it was an animal (shark) this already starts to give us an inside of what the film is going to be about and based around within the first few minutes. Once the shot comes out from the sea it continues on to a tracking movement along side the group of teenagers, this allows us to see how many people there are in this scene and also what the teenagers were doing. The tracking movement continues through the teenagers on the beach till it gets to the end and stops at a medium shot of two characters a girl and boy showing that they are a main focus from the rest and something could possible happen at this time. As the scene progresses we get differented angles shots such as high angled to get a whole outlook of the set location, what is happerning, what they are doing and also who is there. Gradually we get to the shot were the girl is being attacked by the shark around 3:57, as we get to this time we get another point of view shot of the shark looking at the girl ready to attack her. Then once the girl has began to be attacked the camera shots begin to become more close-ups as we can see better facial expressions and get better emotions and see the girls pain and tears.

This is an imagin showing the close up of the two seperate teenagers at the end showing there main focus above the rest of the characters.

Mise-en-scene
Costume: The teenagers sitting on the beach are all wearing dark clothing that is quiet thick such as coats and jackets.
Lighting: The lighting in the scene is very dark but focuses around the main characters. They use the idea of natural light as it is night time so kept it very dark with only the light coming from the fire. Another example of the use of natural light is when Chrissie is being killed in the sea and the moon is reflecting onto her causing a natural light.

Institutinal Research
After doing different research into thriller films and starting to construct my own thriller we come to the conclusion that the bbfc rating would be a 15. We decided this due to the fact most thrillers would be a 15. This is because the sections that make a thriller would include fast-pace and tension as it would usualy be driven by a villian and includes such things as crime and horror and would not be suitable for children younger than 15. Our thriller includes a fast-pace and shows scenes that could be of a bad influence to younger children.
Another part of the research that we concluded was that our thriller would be exhibited on tv and as adverts as it is not a full length film but an opening, It will be shown as a short clip to advertise and draw in an audeience. As we have found out the age rating that we are basing our thriller along when promoting it we would do this during times that the age group will be watching tv or between teenage programmes. Also another way is throught facebook and twitter as that is a main source or promotion in todays generation as over most the popluation is using these websites everyday.
I have found this information out throught various websites. One website i used to try and establish the age rating was http://www.bbfc.co.uk/. I went through many different thriller films and saw the different rating they have recieved and then made connections to my own thriller and what aspects it has like the other that would make it a 15.
Major distributers such as columbia tri-star film would promote my product as the organisation realises many different variaties of films into cinemas such as thrillers. To successfull sart distributing my film product they would have to start promoting before realise. This hightens the audeince expectation of the film, they would promote it through such things as facebook, twitter, youtube and then also throught flyers and posters.
Depending on the film genre, animation, fiction or non fiction it would be published by different companies. One way to publish a film yourself is through programmes such as movie maker.

Conventions of a thriller
Conventions of a thriller are to do with sound and editing, such as quick cuts and the different camera angel changes. also the music that is played at different points that gives tension when appropriate and needed.

An example is from a scene in the film psycho, as when the women is being murdered diegetic music is played to build more tension. Without the music playing there is less emotion in the scene as the audience can become less aware of the situation, by playing the music we become more aware that something bad is going to happen and it makes us more anxious. Other examples in this clip is when close up shots are used to emphasise the characters death and her pain. For example as the killer leaves the camera cuts to a close up of the hand slowly moving down the wall, showing us how the women is hurt without having to focus on her face and making it obvious. Another shot is used at the end of the scene as it starts as a close up to the womens eye and slowly spirals out to a medium close up of her entire face. The camera making a spiraled movement could be interpreted as the water spiraling down the drain, and showing an end to her life We can tell again that the women is now dead as she is lifeless and not blinking. These are all different conventions as they are all different parts that have been editied and have used different camera angles and shots to build tension in the scene therefore creating a thriller.

This shows a close up shot of the girl being murdered. It does a close up to show more emotion in her face, as this is happening diegetic music is being played making the experience feel more dramatic.

History Of a Thriller
Thriller is a genre used in films and television programmes that uses elements of suspense, tension, drama and excitment. Thrillers are usualy very stimulant as tension is built as the viewer watches in anticipation, they are usualy filled with surprise, anxiety and terror. Thriller films are a popular genre as they have a fats pace keeping the viewer interested .
The aim of a thriller is to keep the audience alert throughout and wanting to watch more to discover the end plot. No matter what the sub-genre of the thriller is the film or programme will always lead to a highly stressful climax.Early thriller films go back as far as the 1920s, Alfred Hitchcock began a career in the late 20s were he created a successful "jack the ripper story" followed by another thriller "blackmail" which was also his first sound film. The sound films would have made his thrillers more successful as sound is a major part of a thriller and conventions, this would have lead to a new era of thriller films and letting them be more broad.

Plan Of Main Task
Our main Production is a thriller opening. The story is about a girl that is being stalked through the internet on facebook. We decided to add the use of facebook in on our thriller as it is more relatable to a younger audience who is our targert audience after deciding that the film would be a rating 15. The girl is also being followed around her college and then on her way home. She does not know anything about it till she is alone walking home and comes face to face with the boys. We wanted there to be more than one stalker as it is different from other peoples tasks and can add a twist onto it. Everything is being kept very realistic to keep to the fact that this can happen in real life. The editing is not going to be to dramatic but we just want it to make the audience aware, awake and to keep them interested at all times.

Filming Schedule:
Some of the footage is going to be filmed in college so will be done during or free time after college so we can still acess all the rooms we need to. This will be done last week of march before april halfterm. After doing this we will then film some of the other shots during the half term in the woods. Any re-filming that needs to be done will be done when we get back after half term as we will then begin to edit. Anything we dont like can then just be filmed again.

Editing Schedule:
Editing will also be started at the end of march once we have started our filming, this can be done in some of our lessons but will also needed to be done during our own time. This will be on wednesdays after college as this is the time we are all together. After getting back from halfterm in april we will then concentrate on the editing in lessons and free time to finish it.

Main task-thriller opening

Script: There is not a specific script as in our thriller opening there isnt going to be any speaking. The main aspects are just the girl being stalked walking down different parts of college not realising she is being stalked and also repeating this outside of college in the woods. The thriller we have created does not include speach as we believe this will make it more dramatic, this can create an active audeicne as the audience can create there own script in there mind feeling more involved with the film. Also as the thriller is only an opening it leaves time to show the action of the thriller to draw in more attention and make the audience feel more alert.

Storyboard for Main task:

Actors: We wanted to use seperate actors and try include us in at some point during the main task. This is a problem as we had to find two boys that were willing to work when we needed them and certain times. The difficulty in this is that as we are filming a thriller on stalking it may sometimes be filmed later at night with could be a inconvenance to some of the actors.
There will be no problems filming in the locations that we have chosen as firstly it will be at my house when we are filming the parts on the internet. It will then also be filmed in college and in the woods which will not interupt other people timetables. This is all done in our time after college hours.
We are not using any major props throughout the filming, we will be using one of the actors laptops at my house to film the scene while the stalker is looking through the victims facebook. The only other props would be what the actors are wearing. We want the actors dressed quiet dark so it is more mysterious and all the stalkers to be in hoodies.

Audience Research: From a thriller, audiences usualy expect high tension that will keep them at the end of there seat throughout the film. Thrillers are made to be fast pacing, full of tension, anxiety and terror. This is what we hope to access with our thriller opening. Ideally in the planning of our main task we are hoping to build tension within the first few minutes as it will then drew the audience is and make them want to watch more. We are going to do this by making it fast pacing with such things as running scenes to make it feel faster and look it, also another part of thriller films that can help with fast pacing is my adding diegetic music into the background.

Location:

This shows three of our different locations in which we filmed the main task. This included the woods scenes and also what we filmed in college in the hallway and canteen. We filmed in the woods for the final scene were the victim is confronted, we filmed this in the woods as it has more of a creepy effect and shows the victim alone making our film opening have more aspects of a thriller. We then also done the canteen scene which shows the victim being watched in there own time doing there own thing making it feel more realistic. Finally the hallway scene was to show both the victim and the stalker together through cctv to show different camera angels and effects.
